How To Disable + Discard

It’s mandatory that all spring brake chambers (singles and combinations) be disarmed prior to the unit being discarded or scrapped. This means the power spring must be rendered powerless.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED: Wire brush, The Box, Screwdriver, Oxygen Acetylene Torch, Proper Protective Gear, and Torch Operating Manual.

WARNING: Wear proper clothing and eye protection when operating an acetylene gas torch. Consult safety manuals.

READ BEFORE DISARMING AND PROCESSING

STEP 1

Remove the unit from the vehicle following the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Observe all safety precautions.

STEP 2

Clean the head with a wire brush before cutting the torch.

STEP 3

Open door + place Piggyback or combination Service/Spring Brake inside disarming box. Note: place box release-bolt down.

STEP 4

Close the door and lock with the pin provided.

STEP 5

Through one of the slots in the side, use an acetylene torch to cut a hole, 1.5-2" in diameter, in the head of the brake exposing the power spring. Repeat process through the slot on opposite sides. This provides the torch with sufficient oxygen to permit cutting the spring. Cut 1 of the exposed coils, then repeat process on oppose side of the brake. Caution: Cutting first coil may produce a 'jump' and low pitched 'pop'. DO NOT CUT THE CLAMP BAND BOLTS BEFORE CUTTING THE POWER SPRING COILS.

STEP 6

Use a screwdriver, or similar tool, to ensure the coils are loose inside the head of the break. DO NOT PLACE HANDS INSIDE BOX. If the coils can be moved, the brake has been rendered harmless and discarded.
